Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Screed Operator to join our paving crew. As the screed operator, you will be responsible for controlling the screed unit on our paving machine to ensure the smooth, even, and consistent application of asphalt or concrete on a variety of construction projects. The ideal candidate has a strong attention to detail, a commitment to safety, and works effectively as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor screed: Control the screed on the paving machine to lay asphalt or concrete according to project specifications for depth, width, and grade.
- Adjust controls: Set and adjust the screed’s strike-off, heating elements, and vibratory functions to achieve the proper texture, smoothness, and mat density.
- Coordinate with the crew: Maintain constant communication with the paver operator, truck drivers, and ground crew to ensure a consistent flow of material and efficient paving operations.
- Maintain material quality: Monitor the mix temperature, grade, and slope to ensure a high-quality finished product that meets all standards.
- Perform routine maintenance: Conduct daily inspections and perform basic maintenance on the screed and other equipment, reporting any mechanical issues to the supervisor.
- Ensure safety: Follow all company safety policies and procedures, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Assist with general tasks: Help with other duties as needed, including raking, shoveling, and general cleanup of the work area.
Qualifications
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience operating a screed in asphalt or concrete paving is required.
- Technical skills: Knowledge of screed design and operation, as well as an understanding of grade, slope, and automated control systems.
- Physical stamina: Ability to work long shifts outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Attention to detail: Must have excellent hand-eye coordination and a strong commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Communication: Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with other members of the paving crew.
- Licensing and certifications: Valid driver’s license required. Relevant certifications in heavy equipment operation or OSHA training are a plus.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, which may include nights and weekends, to meet project deadlines.
