Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and physically capable Asphalt Luteman to join our paving crew. The Luteman is a vital member of the team responsible for distributing, leveling, and smoothing hot asphalt to create a uniform and high-quality road surface. This role requires a high degree of physical stamina, attention to detail, and seamless teamwork with the rest of the paving crew.
Key Responsibilities
- Distribute and level asphalt: Use a lute to evenly spread hot asphalt behind the paving machine to achieve the correct thickness, grade, and joint alignment.
- Perform handwork: Finish asphalt edges, repair minor irregularities, and apply asphalt in tight or detailed areas inaccessible to the paving equipment, such as around curbs, drains, and utility covers.
- Assist the paving crew: Work closely with the paver operator, screed operator, and roller operator to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow.
- Prepare surfaces: Help prepare road surfaces by cleaning and clearing debris before the application of new asphalt.
- General labor duties: Assist with various tasks as needed, including shoveling, tamping, and moving materials.
- Maintain tools and safety: Ensure all hand tools are clean and properly maintained. Follow all company and OSHA safety protocols, including wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience in asphalt paving or general construction is required.
- Physical Fitness: Must be able to perform physically demanding labor for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including lifting heavy loads (up to 50 pounds).
- Attention to Detail: Possesses a keen eye for detail to ensure the final product is smooth, uniform, and meets quality standards.
- Teamwork and Communication: Able to work effectively as part of a crew, follow directions from the foreman, and communicate clearly with team members.
- Dependability: Reliable and punctual, with the ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends when necessary.
